Here are some basic guidelines for grading. These, just like in coins, are not etched in stone, but should be used in evaluating any grade on a note.

GEM Uncirculated - A note that looks like the day it was made. Must have excellent centering and no signs of handling or other marks.

CHOICE Uncirculated - Just below GEM but just not a Gem. Must be reasonably well centered. cannot show any marks or handling.

UNCIRCULATED - Must have original appearance and crispness but may be off center or show some minor sign of mishandling. Cannot show creases or folds.

ABOUT Uncirculated - Looks uncirculated at first glance but may have been folded lightly or show a faint crease or other sign that it was handled.

EXTRA Fine - A note that only shows light wear or mishandling. May have a few light folds or creases but must have decent crispness.

VERY Fine - The note will show signs of being in circulation. Can have several folds or creases, will have some crispness. Can have a bit harder folds than XF.

FINE - Shows that it was used and has no crispness left. The folds can be hard but there can be no major tears or splits. The note will still be intact just worn.

VERY Good - A note that circulated well. Can be limp, have stains or even some small tears into the margins. Will usually shows some soiling or be wrinkled in appearance.

GOOD - A note that is limp, lifeless, has some edge or body tears, corner pieces missing, heavy soiling or fading of colors, etc...

POOR - A note that has major problems such as pieces missing that affect the body or design elements, major splits into the design, color fading, discoloration etc...
